Avoid Summer Fun-Damage

Your skin is one of the most sensitive organs we all know and love. It protects our entire being, shields our internal organs from infection, bacteria and damage; we have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to our skin. So why not protect it while it protects you? Seems fair doesn’t it?

Skin cancer happens to be the most frequently seen and diagnosed forms of cancer, mainly because during warm summer months, humans spend a huge amount of their time in the sun – swimming, hiking, biking, brunching…you name it, we’re doing it. But are we doing all we can to protect ourselves? Below are a few tips and products I’ve found to help shield the sun and save my skin during the summertime.

For All You Girls Out There…

Hey gals, I know we all have a deep attachment to our makeup. We love it and we wouldn’t want to be caught dead in public without it. But how much do you know about the products you’re using? Aside from the copious levels of chemicals we lather on our faces everyday, how many of the products contain a reasonable SPF? For summertime, be on the lookout for a foundation that protects your skin, preferably one that contains an SPF of 30 or higher. Below are two products that have received outstanding reviews:

Sweat Cosmetics $42

Developed by athletes, Sweat is designed to give you a long-lasting look that survives your most intense and sweatiest of activities. It’s a breathable, water-resistant mineral power that is dermatologist approved and contains SPF 30. Shop the look here.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush $64

Love this product! It’s so easy to use, pack and re-apply! This foundation is also dermatologist approved and contains SPF 50 to provide protection all day long. Get it here.

If you’re not a fan of mineral powder, consider using a tinted sunscreen or a tinted moisturizer that contains a high SPF and let us know which ones you love!

Men, you too!

You are not alone! The beauty industry has turned a sharp focus toward men, creating products that serve your specific needs as well. There are so many products now available to men to choose from, you just need to start your search. Protect your skin with a high SPF face moisturizer that you can apply in the morning that will last as you kill the work week. Your skin will thank you.

Don’t Just Use Any Sunscreen

Just like makeup, sunscreens are pumped full of damaging chemicals. Some of these chemicals can dry out your skin, some aren’t meant for sensitive skin and some can even burn. Yikes! Rule number one: stay away from the cheap stuff. There’s a reason it’s so cheap. While searching for a sunscreen you’ll want to look for one that is specific for the sensitive skin on your face and another that is strong enough to protect your body from the sun’s harmful rays.

If you’re looking for an organic sunscreen, check out Whole Foods for a variety of different options. If you have super sensitive skin, consider using sunscreen designed for babies, this will be more delicate on the skin but provide you with a good amount of protection.

Re-apply and Step it Up a Notch

DON’T FORGET TO RE-APPLY! This is extremely important especially if you’re spending more than one hour in the sun. As you sweat, sunscreen is absorbed into your pores, evaporated with your sweat or runs off. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re still protected when you may not be.

For those of you who participate in watersports, whether it be surfing, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving or wakeboarding, you’re at a higher risk. Why? Because the water you’re in and around allows the sun’s rays to magnify onto your skin due to reflections. Step it up with zinc oxide; Ocean Potion Sunscreen is clear and fragrance-free, it is also hypoallergenic.

Stay on Your Toes

It’s easy to remember to apply sunscreen when going to the beach or the pool, but have you ever thought of putting sunscreen on to get in your car? Probably not, it sounds crazy. However, driving during the day is when we’re at a higher level of sun exposure, especially our hands. Try to think of the situations where you’ll be exposed to the sun and not even notice: patio dining, driving, walking to the drugstore. Give your body heightened security and protect yourself this summer.

Have you re-applied yet?
